Sustainable Winegrowing – Sheep In The Vineyard, Yealands Family Wines
Yealands Family Wines were the first winery in New Zealand to introduce miniature Babydoll sheep in their vineyard during the growing season.
In Winter, Yealands introduce larger Merino and Corriedale sheep. The 7,000 to 8,000 sheep eat the grass between the vine rows, thus reducing the need for mowing and spraying for weeds. Vineyard Manager Gareth Goodsir explains how this sustainable practise not only saves money, but helps reduce emissions and chemical use.
